Original acrylic painting on canvasboard, Size 18" x 14" approx (45cm x 35cm). The starting-point for this painting was a coastal photograph, with large rocks and seawater. After the initial positioning of the rocks and a general lay-in of dark, jewel-like transparent colours, the painting started to dictate its own direction. It steered away from the original thought of a flat abstract and made me paint it in a semi-realistic manner; using the foaming water as an excuse to lay in lots of texture in the focal area. The rocks were treated with a layer of high-gloss gel in some parts and light moulding paste in others. The final result was a sharp contrast of light and dark, with movement and ruggedness. The work is not framed at the moment.
